WEST MOUNT. COFFEE Coffee Mastery Hub

Coffee Mastery Hub · learn at your own pace

Coffee changed our lives.
Learn what it can do for yours.

A farmer who understands processing earns more for the same crop. A barista who understands extraction becomes worth hiring anywhere. A café owner who understands cost per cup stops guessing. Coffee Mastery Hub teaches all three, from a working roastery in the Western Ghats.

Bean to cupGrowing, processing, roasting, brewing and the business behind it.
Self pacedStart when you want, repeat any lesson, learn on a phone in a plantation or behind a bar.

What coffee does for people

It is a crop, a craft, and a way out.

Coffee carries more lives than almost any crop of its size. It is grown mostly on small holdings, picked by hand, and passed through a dozen pairs of hands before anyone drinks it. In the Western Ghats it has kept families on their land for generations, held shade trees standing where other crops would have cleared them, and given hill villages a cash income in a season when little else earns.

What has changed in the last decade is where the value sits. The same cherry, picked at the same time, is worth a very different amount depending on how it is dried, sorted and graded. A farmer who knows that is negotiating. A farmer who does not is accepting whatever the trader offers.

The same is true further along the chain. A barista who can taste a bad extraction and correct it holds a skill that travels to any city in the world. A café owner who knows their cost per cup survives the first bad quarter. The knowledge is what moves people up, and until recently that knowledge stayed inside the trade.

The same bean, three lives

Who this knowledge changes.

The grower

Gets paid for quality, not weight

Learns why a grade is a grade: how drying, sorting and moisture decide the price. Stops selling an undifferentiated lot and starts selling a specified one.

The barista

Becomes employable anywhere

Learns extraction, dialling in, milk texture and cleaning, in that order. The skills a café manager actually tests you on in a trial shift.

The owner

Runs a café that survives

Learns cost per cup, wastage, machine care and menu design. Most cafés do not close because the coffee was bad. They close because the numbers were never checked.

Why self paced

Nobody can take a month off
to learn coffee.

That is the honest reason self learning matters. The people who most need this knowledge are the ones who can least afford to stop working for it.

A grower cannot leave the farm during harvest. A barista works the hours when classes run. A café owner cannot shut the shop for a week in Bangalore and pay for a hotel on top of the course fee. For most people in coffee, a residential programme is not expensive, it is impossible.

Self paced learning removes the part that was never about coffee. You watch a module after closing, rewatch the one on milk texture until your hands agree with the video, and come back to the grading lesson in the middle of picking season when it actually means something. Learning at the moment you need it is more useful than learning it once in a room and forgetting it by the time it matters.

It also lets you learn in the order your work demands rather than the order a syllabus imposes. Brewing your life, in the sense that matters: one skill at a time, paid for as you go, applied the same week you learn it.

Who it is for

Four kinds of people, four routes through.

You do not need a background in coffee. You do need to know which of these you are, because it decides where to start.

Farmers and growers

You have trees, or your family does, and you sell to whoever buys.

  • Sustainable growing practice
  • Harvest timing and picking
  • Drying, moisture and storage
  • Why grades are priced differently

Processors and mill hands

You handle coffee after the farm and want to protect its value.

  • Post harvest processing
  • Hulling, grading and sorting
  • Defects and how they happen
  • Specialty grade requirements

Baristas and brewers

You work a bar, or want to, and need skills that hold up in service.

  • Espresso extraction and dialling in
  • Milk texture and latte art
  • Filter, pour over and immersion
  • Machine cleaning and care

Café owners and entrepreneurs

You are opening something, or running something that should earn more.

  • Cost per cup and pricing
  • Menu and blend selection
  • Equipment choice and setup
  • Sourcing and supplier terms

Why learn it here

Taught by a company that does the work.

We grow it

Sourced from Wayanad farms in the Western Ghats, a GI origin for Robusta. The growing modules come from the hills they describe.

We mill it

Our own dry mill hulls, grades, gravity sorts and colour sorts. The processing modules are filmed where processing happens.

We roast it

A working roastery, roasting to profile for cafés every week. Not theory rehearsed from a textbook.

We sell it

We supply cafés, run a café, and export. The business modules come from running the thing, including the parts that went wrong.

The courses

Pick where you start.

Every course is self paced and opens on Coffee Mastery Hub, where you enrol and pay. West Mount Coffee Club members take 25% off every one of them, all year. New courses are added as we film them.

This page lists our published courses; the full catalogue, including new releases, is on Coffee Mastery Hub. Prices and availability are confirmed at checkout. Courses are delivered online; some include an optional day at the factory in Wayanad.
